Research Visit – University of Sheffield

This June, our group member Amina Mević is undertaking a research visit at the University of Sheffield, working within the group of Professor Merlyne De Souza at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

This research visit is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Science of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

UMAP 2026

This June, members of our research group attended the 34th ACM Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization (UMAP 2026) in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Amina Mević presented at the Explainable User Models and Personalized Systems (ExUM) workshop:

  • Explainability Requirements for Industry 5.0: Towards Role-Adaptive Explanation in Semiconductor Manufacturing, authored by Amina Mević and Senka Krivić. The work addresses the growing need for explainable AI systems that adapt their explanations to different user roles in industrial settings, with a focus on semiconductor manufacturing as a representative Industry 5.0 use case.

4th Symposium on Urban Air Quality Planning

On 2nd April 2026, our research group participated in the 4th Symposium on Urban Air Quality Planning held in Sarajevo. Amina Mević presented our work on smart air quality monitoring and prediction, contributing to an important regional discussion on environmental challenges facing urban areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The presented paper:

Long-Term Air Quality Forecasting in Sarajevo Using Multivariate Time Series Models and Explainable Artificial Intelligence

was authored by Amina Mević, Vahidin Hasić, Emina Zolota, Fatima Kaljanac, and Senka Krivić. The work explores the application of advanced machine learning techniques combined with explainable AI methods to forecast air quality over extended time horizons, with Sarajevo serving as a case study, a city well known for its significant air pollution challenges, particularly during winter months.

European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI-2024)

In October, PhD students Vahidin Hasić and Amina Mević attended the 27th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI) in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. They participated in workshops on the 19th and 20th and attended the main conference from the 20th to the 24th. A highlight of their experience was attending a special lunch with EurAI fellows, where they received valuable insights and advice on advancing their PhD studies and careers in academia.

Workshop on Best practices from EU policies and strategies to achieve sustainable blue economy

Workshop on Best practices from EU policies and strategies to achieve sustainable blue economy: what path for Bosnia and Herzegovina? was held on 10 October 2024 in Sarajevo. The goal of the workshop was to transfer knowledge and best practices from the EU to Bosnia and Herzegovina in order to achieve sustainable blue economy. Senka Krivić, Amina Mević and Vahidin Hasić participated in this workshop, along with researchers from Italy, Croatia and Slovenia and representatives of European Union. Senka moderated the panel on state of the art of the blue economy in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

CAIDAS Workshop 2024: AI for Software Engineering

CAIDAS Workshop: AI for Software Engineering was held from September 30th to October 1st, 2024 in Würzburg, Germany. The goal was to explore how AI and data science can enhance the engineering of software systems. Senka Krivić and Mubina Kamberović participated in this workshop, along with more than 70 researchers and practitioners from 13 countries. Mubina gave a talk on the topic "Using machine learning methods for predicting students' compiler errors".

European Researchers' Night 2024

Our research group took part in the European Researchers' Night on September 27th, 2024, in Sarajevo. We presented our projects to a diverse audience ranging from ages 7 to 77, which is always a rewarding challenge. Engaging in fruitful conversations provided us with valuable insights and sparked ideas for upcoming projects.

STEM Youth Camp 2024

In the period from August 3 to 7, we held a STEM Youth Camp in which 43 high school students from Bosnia and Herzegovina participated. In a good mood, the participants had the opportunity to listen to eight lectures of our successful members from different STEM fields. In addition, they attended four different workshops, where they gained practical experience solving simple but challenging scientific and technical problems. Amina Mević participated in the organization while Vahidin Hasić held the AI ​​workshop.

EEML 2024

Vahidin Hasić and Mubina Kamberović attended Eastern European Machine Learning Summer School (EEML) 2024. The school was held in the period from July 15 to July 20 in Novi Sad, Serbia. EEML is yearly premier school organized by Google DeepMind for Eastern Europe. This year it had acceptance rate of around 20% and gathered around 150 PhD students from 47 countries. The participants had the opportunity to listen to lectures from world-renowned experts in the field of AI. In addition to lectures, the participants had the opportunity to work on workshops and projects.

ICRA 2024

Amar Halilović attended the International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) 2024. The conference was held from May 13 to May 17 in Yokohama, Japan. ICRA is The yearly premier conference on robotics and automation is organized by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society. This year, it had an acceptance rate of around 45% and gathered around 7000 researchers. This year’s conference theme was “CONNECT+,” reflecting the conference’s aim of helping to build relationships and potential collaborations with participants within and outside their field of study.
